Guide to Buying a Mat
When it comes to Pilates mats, there are a lot out there!
Everyone has their own personal requirements whether you’re a beginner or an advanced student. Pilates mats are generally thicker than the standard exercise or yoga mat as the most important part of their function is to cushion the spine, knees, wrists – basically any boney bits!
Weight?
If you’re practising Pilates at home, and space isn’t an issue, then having a heavy cushioned mat is perfect as you won’t need to worry about carrying it to class. However, if you do need to take your mat with you, then you’ll want to make sure the mat is light enough to carry and has a suitable carry strap.
Size Does Matter!
Size is something not to be overlooked. Nobody wants to be in the middle of a Roll and find there is no mat beneath your head. The average size of a Pilates mat is approximately 180cm x 60cm. There are longer mat options available if you are taller.
What to Consider
There are a number of points you’ll want to consider when choosing a Pilates mat:
Thick or Thin?
The best thickness for Pilates is between 10mm to 15 mm.
Material Type
Material is something to consider. A mat that is too stretchy when performing Pilates exercises can be uncomfortable because it means you’ll be slipping and sliding and possibly risking good alignment. Ensure the mat is made from a dense but soft, comfortable and relatively grippy material. If you’re a conscientious consumer you may prefer to purchase an eco mat which is kind to your body and to the environment. These mats are made from natural materials and contain no PVC, EVA, or any other synthetic materials.
The Comfort Factor
Comfort is what it is all about, and this is definitely the one that’s the most personal. What one person thinks is comfortable may not appeal to another. It really is trial and error but if you consider the previous points you’ll probably get the comfort factor just right too.
Cost
Obviously cost is important. You may think cheap mats mean uncomfortable Pilates. but that’s not always the case. There are lots of affordable mats out there that don’t sacrifice quality, aesthetics, function and sustainability.
